Areas of Practice

Jonathan Lazar

Jonathan maintains a full-time family law practice, covering such issues as divorce, separation, property division, issues concerning children (custody, guardianship, access and residency), as well as pre and post marriage agreements and other issues affecting British Columbia families. In addition to his private practice, Jonathan assists the firm with their contract as Director's Counsel for the Ministry of Children and Families (Delta Region). Jonathan also appears regularly in both the Provincial and Supreme Courts of British Columbia, as well as an occasional appearance at the British Columbia Court of Appeal.

Jonathan's style of practice is to seek fair and amicable solutions, through reasonable proposals and positions, while advancing his client's interests and expectations. The goal of his practice is to work together with the client to keep costs, conflict and emotional stress low, while working to achieve the most favourable legal solutions under the given circumstances. While Jonathan is skilled in traditional litigation strategies, his practice emphasises the use of other out-of-court settlement procedures such as mediation or collaboration.

Originally from Montreal, Quebec, Jonathan moved eastward in 1988 to attend the University of New Brunswick, in Fredericton. After completing his bachelors of arts degree (majoring in psychology & sociology), and his law degree, both at U.N.B., Jonathan moved to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 1996 to start a general practice with the seven lawyer firm of Carr, Stevenson & MacKay. Despite the truly enjoyable experience of practicing in a smaller community, not to mention the short distances to some of the world's best beaches and golfing, Jonathan moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1999. Jonathan worked as an attorney for Nextel Communications Inc., doing project management, regulatory and administrative law for approximately one year, during which time he successfully completing the Massachusetts Bar Exam in 2000. In January 2001 Jonathan was requested to join the ranks of the prestigious Boston law firm of Brown, Rudnick, Berlack & Israels, a firm of over two hundred attorneys. Jonathan continued to work with clients in the wireless communications industry in areas of administrative, zoning and regulatory law.

In 2002, Jonathan moved to British Columbia and continued a general commercial litigation practice with a large downtown Vancouver firm before joining Kahn Zack Ehrlich Lithwick in January 2004.

Jonathan and his wife, Irit, live in Vancouver. He enjoys skiing, biking, playing hockey, softball, and other team sports.
