Makaela graduated from law school at the University of Victoria in 2019 and was called to the British Columbia bar in 2020. While at law school, Makaela took on active roles in the Law Student Society and in organizing social events for her law class. Between her first and second year of law school, Makaela volunteered as a grant writer for a community organization in Oaxaca, Mexico that focuses on political capacity-building for Indigenous women. In her final year of law school, she completed a semester working as a student at the Law Centre, providing legal advice and services to low income clients in criminal, family, and civil matters.

Makaela completed her articles and stayed on as an associate at a national firm where she practiced primarily in the areas of corporate, commercial, employment, and insurance law before joining a boutique securities firm in downtown Vancouver. Makaela’s current practice is focused on corporate and commercial law.

In her spare time, Makaela is happiest being outside with her dog, hiking, biking, and camping.
