Susan grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she survived many a cold winter and which she believes kept her rather well-preserved. Having moved to a somewhat more temperate climate, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in English Literature, from the University of British Columbia in 1988. After her younger brother, already practising Law, convinced her she would “really like” Law School (which she actually did), she graduated from UBC Law School in 1991 and completed her articles at what was then Gerbrandt McGee, a “boutique” Plaintiff Personal Injury Law Firm. Susan was called to the BC Bar in 1992. She practised primarily in the area of ICBC defence for two years. She then moved to Harrop, Phillips, Powell & Gray LLP in Gastown where she practised for almost 19 years in the areas of Plaintiff Personal Injury, Family Law and WorkSafeBC claims. Susan joined Whitney Derber in the Plaintiff Personal Injury department at Kahn Zack Ehrlich Lithwick LLP in March 2018. Susan has appeared as counsel before both the Provincial and Supreme Courts of BC and the Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal.
Susan is an avid moviegoer who tries to make a point of seeing one movie a week with her dedicated “movie group”. She is a longtime member of the Trial Lawyers Association of BC, on whose executive she served for many years. She volunteers at Access Pro Bono's clinics and recently became a member of the Reel Causes Society which, throughout the year, partners with a different charity or non-profit society for a film event at SFU Woodwards' Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema.
